A list of must-see performances
The best of contemporary Italian and international theatre is on show in Florence in one of the most impressive venues in the city, the Teatro Cantiere Florida.
For the past five years, the Materia Prima review, curated by Murmuris, has been bringing the latest creations by world-famous directors to Florence. The Teatro Cantiere Florida provides an exceptional platform for the Materia Prima listings of contemporary theatre, ranging from novelties to the great classics. An edition which, every Thursday in March, will create space for new proposals and revolutionary ideas. An Eschimese in Amazzonia by Liv Ferracchiati, a production by The Baby Walk (Premio Scenario 2017) opens the festival on Thursday 8 March. Sardinia, known for its history and incomprehensible words, is the rustic setting for Macbettu (Ubu Prize 2017 as best performance of the year), a story told by Alessandro Serra with the extraordinary Leonardo Capuano, on show at the Teatro Cantiere Florida on Thursday 15 March.
Materia Prima 2018 is also a platform for stories from remote suburbs to tell, short stories about heroic hopes. Like the Controcanto Collective boys who on Sempre domenica (Inbox Prize 2017) will be performing on Thursday 22 March with grotesque stories about the working world. Three extraordinary actresses will grace the scenes: Daria Deflorian (who will also hold an advanced training workshop for actors), Monica Piseddu and Monica Demuru, confirming the quality of the project in a tribute to the great European literature with Annie Ernaux (The 2016 Premio Strega with Gli Anni) and her Memoria di ragazza, staged on Thursday 29 March. Finally, an extraordinary event and a joint project will showcase Materia Prima in the Middle East Now festival on Saturday 14 April, for an event that will close a very special fifth edition.
