An exhibition at Palazzo Pitti

The Fondazione Pitti Immagine Discovery presents Romanzo breve di moda maschile, an exhibition created with the support of the Uffizi Galleries staging 30 years of men’s fashion, from 1989 to the present, seen through the Pitti Uomo lens.

At the Palazzo Pitti Fashion and Costume Museum Olivier Saillard tells the history and evolution of menswear page after page, combining Made in Italy with Guest Designers; the talents of the international contemporary fashion scene with the experiences of clothing entrepreneurs. The project is dedicated to the memory of Marco Rivetti, President of Pitti Immagine from 1987 to 1995. On showcase are leading fashion designers and brands who took part in special events at Pitti Uomo from 1989 to 2019. Pieces from those same collections are presented in Florence alongside a selection of garments and special items from the same period, for a total of around 110 brands.

A significant chapter of this Romanzo Breve is the creation of a real men’s fashion collection: the Men’s Fashion Collection of the Discovery Foundation, which was donated to the Museum of Fashion and Costume at Palazzo Pitti.

A book in an off-scale format, both delicate and gigantic, unfolds poetically in all the museum’s rooms. Page after page, the show traces, with modesty or large titles, in pop up and light format, the various currents of men’s fashion through the presentations of the many special guests at Pitti Uomo. Imaginary or fictional, this book tells the story of men’s fashion and its leaders, sometimes in dialogue with the historical collections of the Fashion Museum and with the paintings of male portraits of the Gallery of Modern Art at Palazzo Pitti.
