Middle East Now 10th Edition in Florence
The 10th edition of MIDDLE EAST NOW brings the contemporary Middle East in Florence from 2 to 7 April 2019 with a rich program of cinema, documentaries, art, music, theater, talks, food and events.
The international festival, conceived and organized by the cultural association Map of Creation, will be held at Cinema La Compagnia, Cinema Stensen, Teatro Cantiere Florida, Fondazione Studio Marangoni and other locations.
The program includes 44 films awarded in international festivals, including 26 Italian premieres, 10 international premieres, 1 world premiere. A movie journey that touches the countries and societies of the Middle Eastern area, now more than ever on the recent news. Stories, directors and actors from Afghanistan, Algeria, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, United Arab Emirates, Kurdistan, Kuwait, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Lebanon, Palestine, Syria, Tunisia, Turkey. They will make the cultures and societies of these countries known to the audience, with a perspective that seeks to overcome the prejudices with which they are often represented.
In these ten years of Middle East Now we have tried to tell the Middle East with a new look – say Lisa Chiari and Roberto Ruta, founders and art directors of the festival – made up of stories of men and women who live in countries abroad, with specific cultures and political-social situations, but with great connections with our daily lives. We have tried to tell the Middle East beyond stereotypes, presenting in Florence the most recents movies and contemporary artworks coming from this area of the world, because we believe that these are the strongest instrument to create a cultural link to build social integration. Today more than ever this is an important requirement: in a historical moment dominated by contrasts and prejudices, a window on culture and creativity from the Middle East serves to look at a future that we hope will be better ”.
