The summer program
Built in the 1930s by the engineer Pier Luigi Nervi, the Manifattura Tabacchi represents one of the most significant expressions of the Italian rationalist style. Within an innovative urban regeneration process, the program of temporary events and initiatives aimed at the district and the city contributes to the activation of the renewed spaces of the Manufacture, open to the public every day during the summer 2019. The B9 project (from Building 9) is articulated on approximately 3000 square meters of surface between internal and external spaces and proposes a realistic vision of the Manufacture of tomorrow: open to the city, connected with the world, sustainable and creative; an incubator of innovation for the city and a new international excellence, where everyday and extraordinary coexist; a contemporary center for Florence, which is a cultural and artistic center by day and stage of the night music scene.
B9 also integrates the site-specific installation designed by neurobiologist Stefano Mancuso and edited by PNAT: the first factory of air, an experimental device that reduces indoor pollution by exploiting the plants’ ability to absorb and degrade atmospheric pollutants. Even contemporary art is present in the courtyard of the Ciminiera with TOAST Project Space, an independent micro-space curated by the artist Stefano Giuri where young artists of international origin are invited to produce site-specific works every two months. Starting in September and for six months, six young international artists will be engaged in the spaces of the former Manifattura Tabacchi factory.
The project conceived and edited by Sergio Risaliti, historian and art critic, director of the Museo Novecento in Florence, is part of LA CURA, LA MERAVIGLIA, L’ARMONIA, a three-year residency project during which the artists are confronted with the space and the history of Manifattura Tabacchi in an artistic research path that includes, among other things, visits aimed at spaces and institutions of the Tuscan territory and a series of workshops held by established artists at national and international level.
