Flowers, sea and music
Sanremo is the city of flowers and the international home of Italian song. The city is redolent with scents, lying on the coast with an unforgettable view over the Mediterranean sea, and from this June, it will also be home to the new luxury outlet centre The Mall Sanremo.
The Riviera dei Fiori is the last stretch of coastline in Liguria where Sanremo takes pride of place, a scented haven and exclusive destination, just a stone’s throw from France. Here, the palm-lined promenade named after Italo Calvino offers a pleasant walk overlooking the sea to celebrate the writer, who was very attached to the city of Sanremo which he felt was his native town. What remains of the original old city, called La Pigna, is still alive and vibrant, a labyrinth of caruggi – alleys – and houses. Abandoned for years, La Pigna has been revived thanks to artists from various parts of the world who have decided to revamp the area.
Art and architecture certainly aren’t lacking in Sanremo. Its avenues and waterfront boast many buildings in Liberty style and monumental palaces such as the renowned Casino, Sanremo’s heart and soul. A little hidden lie the green parks and splendid villas with botanical groves, housing rare species of plants – the particularly mild climate has allowed to create singularly beautiful gardens, many of which can be visited year round to enjoy the scent of exotic plants and lush flowers in multiple varieties. An example are the Hanbury gardens in Ventimiglia and the various villas in Sanremo and Bordighera, another pearl on the riviera.
A jewel on the Riviera dei Fiori known throughout the world for its flowers, its unique and evocative atmosphere and for the Italian song festival, Sanremo is a magical destination to be enjoyed year round, even more so with the opening of luxury outlet The Mall Sanremo.
