Wow factor Tuscany embraces Asian holistic wellness
Half an hour away are Florence and Siena, and all around, the Chianti vineyards. In this landscape studded with far-reaching views of the Tuscan countryside, Castello del Nero, a 12th-century castle and now a magnificent 5-star country resort, is the Asian COMO Group’s first Italian property, which reopened on 11 June with a new look. In addition to the 300-hectare estate with a 25-meter heated outdoor pool, two tennis courts, an outdoor fitness area (the Forest Gym), and 50 rooms and suites with interior decor designed by Paola Navone, there is now the new COMO Shambhala Retreat, the first Asian-inspired wellness experience in Tuscany, which more than lives up to expectations. The 1,000m² gem of a spa combines targeted treatments with world-class technical expertise.
At Castello del Nero, the holistic wellness approach includes the world-renowned energy-giving COHO Shambhala cuisine, as featured in the book The Pleasures of Eating Well. Nourishing Favourites from the COMO Shambhala Kitchen. Each dish is a perfectly balanced mix of cooked and raw foods that satisfy the palate while boosting concentration and energy.
By contrast, the approach has not changed at the Michelin-starred La Torre gourmet restaurant, the resort’s pride and joy, overseen for many years by the great chef Giovanni Luca Di Pirro. His is a quality cuisine which combines fine dining with the regional specialties expected by international guests. Diners at La Torre can savour fine wines from the cellar which boasts a thousand labels, and enjoy dishes that are the flawless expression of Tuscany and Italy, such as Fish Soup (lobster, shrimp, scampi, mullet, gurnard, scorpion fish and monkfish), first steamed than cooked in a wood oven; Cappelletti stuffed with pigeon, its broth and fresh porcini mushrooms. Among the main courses, Laura Peri Lamb with carrots, chamomile sauce, pumpkin, broccoli and cauliflower, is a must.
