Concerts, events and celebrations

Here is a listing of this year’s events, concerts and ideas in Florence and Tuscany, to let you spend a sparkling moment of celebration and fun on New Year’s Eve.

New Year’s Eve in the square is the locals’ typical way to spend the night in the city, with music and concerts livening up the historic centre of Florence. There is music for all tastes, ranging from pop, gospel, and jazz in Piazzale Michelangelo, Piazza Signoria, Santissima Annunziata and Oltrarno. Siena too celebrates the new year in Piazza del Campo, where music plays lead role. On New Year’s Day there are many exhibitions to visit in Tuscany. Pisa’s Palazzo Blu hosts the exhibition ‘Da Magritte a Duchamp’ dedicated to the masters of Surrealism and open until 17 February 2019.

In Florence don’t miss the exhibition at Palazzo Strozzi dedicated to Marina Abramović – one of the most celebrated and controversial personalities in contemporary art – who has revolutionized the idea of performance itself.

Until 20 January 2019 the Uffizi is home to the Leicester Code by Leonardo da Vinci, the manuscript full of annotations and drawings by this genius artist. Mountain aficionados and keen hikers will find just what they need in Tuscany, ranging from high altitude ski slopes in Abetone, Lunigiana and Monte Amiata, but also many other fun activities for the whole family, such as snowshoeing in the snowy woods, and ice skating in rinks around town. Finally, on New Year’s Eve and throughout the month of December, the most beautiful and evocative Christmas markets are open in Tuscany, providing plenty of opportunities to buy gifts, sip a good mulled wine and take the children to meet Santa.
