The bag that celebrities love

Bottega Veneta continues to celebrate its unmistakable woven leather bag with the travelling exhibit “The Knot: A Retrospective”, showcasing the clutch that made the brand globally famous in the 60s. The “Knot” owes its name to its knot lock, which has turned it into the most iconic bag when it comes to intrecciato leather.

Loved by celebrities the world over, it has always featured in the Bottega Veneta women’s collections. There are more than 400 variations, including an 18-carat gold version. The retrospective dedicated to the Knot is a travelling archive exhibition which is regularly showcased in boutiques around the world with the aim of promoting the various options of the bag which have been manufactured since 1978. As artistic director Tomas Maier stated, the company never kept an archive, so reconstructing the history of the Knot bag meant burrowing through specialised vintage shops and collections in what became an all-out treasure hunt. An elaborate polished effect for the Origami Knot clutch, antique gems for the Vintage Jewel Knot, a lacey effect in the metal version of the Metal Lace Knot, sterling silver intreccio, padded satin and croc are just a few of the variations that the Knot has embodied throughout the years.

This bag, therefore, is of historic and also creative value. As Maier puts it, “the Knot is the real symbol of the Bottega Veneta brand, linking the company’s history to its future in an inextricable bind. It is a pleasure for me to design it and an opportunity to explore creativity in a special way”.
