The biggest, the most famous performances

Over the years, on the stage of the Ariston during the Sanremo Festival, memorable performances of the most famous stars in the world have took place: iconic moments that have become part of the history.

The deepest voice of international music, Barry White, arrived for the first time in Sanremo in 1977, the year of the first edition in the new location at the Ariston Theater. In 1984, in an edition hosted by Pippo Baudo and won by Al Bano and Romina Power, performed the Queen to sing (in playback) Radio GaGa twice on two different evenings. Duran Duran performed in Sanremo in 1985 and they were truly an event: the English group was at the peak of success and brought to the Festival all their divism. Whitney Houston in 1987 (the first artist to perform twice in Sanremo) was one of the very few of the time to perform live. For her it was the first time in Italy.

Take That performed at the Sanremo Festival in 1994 with the dance hit Relight my fire. The white duke Dawid Bowie was a prestigious guest of the Sanremo Festival in 1997 with the song Little Wonder. 1998 was the year of the planetary success of the film Titanic and the Sanremo Festival did not miss the opportunity to invite Celine Dion who sang the theme of the film My heart will go on live. Madonna also performed at the Sanremo Festival in 1998 to present the single Frozen (sung in playback). The crystalline and soulful voice of Mariah Carey enchants the audience of the Sanremo Festival 1999 with I still believe. It was then the turn of Britney Spears who in Sanremo 2002 singing the single I’m not a girl not yet a woman. The pop revelation of recent years, Ed Sheeran, in 2015 glided on the stage of the Ariston to give the audience the songs Sing and Thinking Out Loud.

For this 2020 edition two young international artists will go on stage at the Festival. It’s about Lewis Capaldi, the 23-year-old Scottish artist of Italian origin that conquered the charts all over the world this year with the ballad Someone You Loved, with over 800 million views. The second confirmed international artist is Dua Lipa, a great voice of world pop.
