Florence in the heat of summer: cultural events, DJ sets and more
Have you chosen Florence as your vacation destination? Or do you have to stay in town this summer and are worried about getting through the long, muggy weeks of empty streets and closed businesses? Fear not: Florence is offering up a long list of events and interesting locations for August just waiting to be discovered, whether you want an unforgettable vacation or kick back in the evening on your time off.
True, there’s no seaside in town, but you’ve got a bevy of water options to help you cool off, such as the Pavoniere swimming pool in the Cascine Park (an exciting celebration is planned here for Assumption on August 15) or the Costoli and Bellariva municipal pools. Or, a bit further afield, there’s the Renai Park in Signa. From lunchtime on, be sure to stop by the beach on the Arno in San Niccolò. This is a real urban beach with a bar, where you can go sunbathing or enjoy shows, installations, DJ sets or check out the exciting happy hour while watching the sunset!
From happy hour to late night, open-air bars and restaurants abound, with events that are almost always free. Just walk through the buzzing neighborhoods of Sant’Ambrogio or the Oltrarno. Or look for some original open-space summer locations like the Limonaia Villa Strozzi (with a pizzeria), OFF Bar–Lago dei Cigni in the gardens of the Fortezza da Basso, or the Art Garden in the Giardino dell’Orticoltura (horticultural gardens).
Florence’s many cultural offerings include classical and jazz concerts and art, like the must-see show by the contemporary artist Giuseppe Penone in the spectacular twin settings of Forte Belvedere and the Boboli Gardens; a single ticket lets you into both shows.
