Sport and style compete together
The biggest sporting event ever – the Rio 2016 Olympics – will be celebrated in Brazilian style. It will be a feast for the sports and the fashion world alike. Top designers will be clothing the prime athletes in the world with state-of-the-art apparel.
Italian athletes will be sporting Giorgio Armani as in the 2012 London Olympics and the Winter Olympics in Sochi 2014. ‘King George’ has created a complete wardrobe, including outfits for official occasions and leisure time. The uniforms are in the traditional midnight blue, but this time feature a distinctive gold ‘Italy’ lettering and new logo. Federica Pellegrini has been confirmed as flagship model for the Azurri team at the Rio 2016 opening ceremony. The suit that the athletes will be wearing on the podium boasts contrasting white inserts on the back with ‘Italy’ written in gold. The inside of the jackets and sweatshirts is in gold too, with the first stanza of the national anthem by Mameli printed under the neck line, making it visible only when the collar is pulled up.
The British team have brought in Stella McCartney to design the Olympic uniforms. The stylist opted for a modern design that brings together innovation and tradition, and has crafted a revisited version of the national emblem. The uniforms are dominated by a shield with floral emblems of the four nations and four chains representing the four year gap between the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
